Chicago HBCU Week is more than a series of events. It is a celebration of legacy, access, and opportunity — rooted in a tradition that has shaped Black excellence for over 150 years.
The Impact of HBCUs
Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) make up only about 3% of colleges and universities in the United States, yet they produce:
Nearly 20% of all Black college graduates
Over 40% of Black engineers
Around 50% of Black lawyers and doctors
Nearly 80% of Black judges
HBCUs have long been engines of upward mobility. They create environments where Black students are seen, supported, and empowered to lead — academically, culturally, and professionally.
Beyond academics, HBCUs generate an estimated $15 billion in annual economic impact nationwide and support thousands of jobs in surrounding communities. Their influence extends far beyond campus gates.
Why This Week Is Historic
Chicago HBCU Week brings that impact to one of the most iconic cities in the world — culminating in the first-ever HBCU baseball game at Wrigley Field.
But this week is about more than baseball.
It includes:
College fairs and readiness workshops
Financial literacy and workforce development programming
Alumni networking and economic empowerment events
Youth engagement and exposure to higher education pathways
For many young people in our communities, exposure is everything. Seeing HBCU student-athletes compete on a national stage plants a seed — that they, too, belong in those spaces.
Representation changes possibilities.
The Cultural Significance
HBCUs were founded during a time when Black students were legally denied access to education. They became safe havens, incubators of leadership, and centers of cultural identity.
They produced civil rights leaders, innovators, artists, athletes, and entrepreneurs who reshaped America.
HBCU Week honors that legacy while investing in the future.
